"Giving and Receiving"

God has given us his written word to be a guide and a testimony of him. Its complete with learning who him, the crucifixion of Christ, the promise of salvation, and so much more. It teaches very basic things that are in the will of God, such as giving and receiving.

During the days of the apostles, their teachings and works were so great that the people were of one heart and of one soul. They willingly brought and gave their possessions to the church. Their giving supported the needs of the ministry and each other. They had all things in common. Thanksgiving Day for many is a day of giving and receiving. The church must continue to tell that this concept of giving and receiving was ordained by God in the beginning of creation.

God had given Adam everything to name as he pleased. God saw that he lacked companion and he created a woman from Adam's rib to be his help meet. In Adam and Eve, we learn that (1) we need each other and (2) must take care of each other. Many question why are there so many poor in the most richest country. The answer is in the written word. Mary, a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, used a very precious oil to anoint his feet, just before his passion. The disciples question the use of the oil and thought it could have been sold for money. But Jesus responded with a very important answer that continues to be real today, "For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always."   It is not that God can't reverse the needs of the poor. Instead, he give us an opportunity to give and receive. Our needs are supplied through each other by his amazing grace.

We are always either in the giving or receiving line. Either line is a time to experience the love of God through others. Not all things are materialistic. We have gifts of wisdom, prayer, and the patience to just listen. To give is to share a blessing that God has given to you. To receive is to realize that you are not self-sufficient, but need help.

Jesus gave his life for the sins of the world. He received the burden of the cross. It is through him that the church must share in the duty to always give and receive. It is not a yearly or traditional day. It becomes a daily joyous way of living. For us, everyday is a day of thanksgiving. Express gratitude for your families and friends whom God has placed in your life. Think about how you give and how you receive. This scripture gem about the early church is worthy reading and applying to our own lives that we may have all things common.
