Sermon Take Away: "Close, But Not Close Enough"

Jesus Christ had a short life that fulfilled the greatest assignment of all: He saved the world from sins. During his earthly ministry, he did marvelous miracles, he taught the word with authority, and he even rebuked the hypocrisy of the religious leaders. His cross was between two thieves. One believed and was saved on his cross. The thief who did not believe could not see the light of life that was next to him. He was close but not close enough.
The life of the thief is a reflection of the lives of many believers. We profess to believe, but our lives can the opposites. We don't want to have the presence of his holy Spirit, yet struggle with the desires of the flesh because we can't let traces of sin go. To believe in the salvation of Jesus Christ is just part of the way. We must surrender our lives daily and seek him to walk in righteousness.
What do we need to remove that we not become like the rebellious thief? We must eliminate pride (relying on self), misunderstandings (not applying the word of God), ignorance (closing our eyes to the truth), second guessing ourselves (not taking time to listen to the Holy Spirit), and selfishness (lack of love for what God's give to us. He represented those believers who have one foot in and one foot out. He represented those who have heard of Christ but openly refused him.
To have an okay attitude about our soul is not enough. God wants to know that he matters to us. Continue to give thought to his way, his will, and his word. We want to be close. But to be closer is much better. Thank God for Jesus!
