Sermon Take Away: “A Life of Humility”

Philippians 2:3-8; Isaiah 53: 3-5; 1 Peter 5:6

The world has made so many days for almost anything to be remembered and celebrated. February 22 was “Be Humble Day”. I found this quite interesting. A day to for people to acknowledge their faults to make you a better person and to show others that they are important. What made it even more interesting, is that no one really could tell of the origin.

Life is composed of the natural and spiritual. In the natural, it seems like a positive day. In the spiritual, to be humble is in the will of God. Humble and humility mean the same. Humble means to be modest or meek. Humility is a modest or low view of one’s importance. It was very easy for me to think of the origin: Jesus Christ. His life is the perfect example of humility. “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

Being humble is not just a yearly event, but it is what we want to become following the ways of Christ. He came down from heaven and made himself no reputation. His teachings and attention were focused on our heavenly Father. He did marvelous works to the saving of souls to the thousands of people who came to him. But having all that divine power did not change his humility.

He is our example of how modest and meek. In humility, we accept that we make mistakes and that we are not always in the right. Humility leads us to confess to the Savior, seeking for his forgiveness and help. Humility is not about what you do or what you have achieved. There is a way of sharing what you do without appearing to be self-purpose. To have a spirit of humility is not one of weakness. You can remain one of determination and still be modest in response to others. Christ was not weak. He was loving and submissive to the will of God. He was the only man that could die for the sins of the whole world. He took on our burden of sins and endured the rejection of his own people, which led to the pains of the crucifixion. He was the only one who could defeat Satan in his plan to destroy humanity.

Christ lived a life of humility. Humility is to willingly acknowledge the needs of others and extend kindness and understanding. The concept of a “Humble Day” would be very useful if it was told that the greatest teacher and example of being humble is Jesus Christ. This could spark a much needed revival throughout the world, encouraging respect of others. A life of self-will and self-centeredness can be changed and forgiven, if people took the time to honestly self-examine and realize their need for Christ.

Satan will continue to steal anything that Christ has given to us. What believers must continue to do is seek a life of humility. In doing so, we will receive an approval from whom humility flows. “Humble yourselves therefore under the might hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.”
