Sermon Take Away: “Who Has The Bigger Shadow?”

With all of the serious troubles in the world, the enemy wants people to think that he has the upper hand. No, not so. Our God holds the whole world in hands. There is nothing greater than him.

After Israel walked through the Red Sea, they had reached the land of Canaan. Moses was commanded by God to send out twelve men, one from each tribe, to spy out the land for forty days. They were to get a detail report on the people, which included their size, land, and food. When they returned to Moses and Aaron, they reported the people of the land were strong and great. Caleb believed that they were well able to overcome them. But the other men did not believe that they were able to go against them.

In times of trouble, which can be bigger than what we can handle, we must believe that God will fight our battle. The faithless men saw themselves as “grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight”. They were to small and weak to fight against those who were larger in size and strength. They had forgotten their great deliverances from Pharaoh and his thousands of men. They had forgotten who gave them daily manna that came down from heaven.

When face with an enemy, that appears larger than self, embrace the death of Christ. The depthness of his love is found at the cross. We should never see ourselves as small, powerless people. We are somebody because he died just for us. Never be fearful of the appearance and words of the enemy. Who has the bigger shadow?

God was provoked by the murmur of Israel against his leaders and himself. He would have destroyed them at that time, but Moses reasoned with him that the surrounding nations will hear that the God of Israel was not able to bring them into the promised land. God listened to Moses and said that the people will live in the wilderness for forty years and their carcasses shall fall. Their children, Caleb, and Joshua will enter into the land. God wants us to believe in him and to know what he can do. His presence is far greater that what we see.

When Christ was nailed on the cross to die, between the two malefactors, the Jews thought that was the end of him. But the will of God was in motion. He rose from his death after three days with power over death. Who has the bigger shadow? In the most difficult of time, we must encourage each other that we can do all things through Christ which strengthens us. Abide under the shadow of the Almighty. His power is always in action like none other.

God was not pleased with Israel’s lack of faith. Every day we are given an opportunity to draw closer to him and to impart his promises in our heart to remind us that God has the bigger shadow.
