Acts 1 & 2
Prior to his departure, Jesus Christ commanded his Apostles to wait for the promise of the Father. They were gathered together with one accord, when something phenomenal happened on the day of Pentecost. “Suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as a fire, and it sat upon each of them. ” The power of God had come upon the church, the beginning of a new era.
Jesus was the power from heaven in the flesh. He taught the word in great authority and he did mighty wonderous deliverances in the lives of many. The Apostles were eyewitnesses to his life, death, resurrection and ascension. It was now time for them to do even greater works. Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” They needed the promise from the Father, which was the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost was the heavenly power that enabled them to do the great missionary work. It is the supernatural power of fire, the strength that comes from an omnipotent God. The Father, Son and the Holy Spirit is the divinity of God himself.
On the day of Pentecost, the power was so great that many men of different languages could understand each other. Many were amazed and in doubt. Others mocked the church and accused them of being drunk. The same power that was poured on the early church, is the same power that we need to fulfil God’s will. It is not by our own strength that we maintain the righteousness of our faith and in our ministries. We can obtain all things only by the power of God.
