Scriptures: John 17; Hebrews 11:6
We can take a great sense of comfort to know that Jesus cares for us. His love for us is beyond human comprehension. At it is written in the inspired word of God, he fulfilled the will of his Father when he gave his life for the sins of the world. Yet in all that Christ endured, just for us, his own suffering was not the focus of his prayer that night in which his false accusers arrested him.
The gospel of John 17 is the Lord’s prayer. This is the prayer that Jesus prayed to his Father the night he was arrested. In this prayer, Jesus acknowledges the glory of God and the fulfillment of his will. He mentions of the glory that he would receive, following his death and resurrection. He prayed that the Father would “sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth”. We are set apart to live for God. It is in God’s word that we learn how to obey him. Choosing to live for God makes our life different from someone who chooses not to follow his way. His word alone is truth.
As Christ continues this prayer, he mentioned the disciples that were put in his care. He had prepared them for the work of the gospel. They were well-equipped for the challenges to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Then in his prayer, he mentioned his followers that would know the words because of the powerful testimonies and teachings of the apostles. “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word.” Yes, Jesus prayed for you.
Christ knew that the life of believers would be difficult. We would have to overcome dealing with our own temptations, while living a life that fulfills the will of God. He prayed that in the time of temptations that God would keep us.
Prayer is very important and essential. Prayer tells God that we are giving him control of our life. It tells him that we realize that we can do nothing on our own. We need him for everything. When we pray, we acknowledge that God is supreme. He is first in all things. With prayer, we must believe. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is…”
The Father has given all power to Christ in heaven, in earth and under the earth. Right now he is our meditator, speaking on our behalf. So let us continue to take comfort, that in your most needed times, you have a very present help in Jesus Christ. Thank God that he is still working on your behalf. He prayed for you.
