Scripture: Lamentations 3:22,23; Mark 10:46-51
Our Father in heaven is so faithful. He loves us in in spite of what we deserve. There are many reasons to express gratitude to him. One constant blessing that continues from generation to generation are his mercies. “For his mercy endureth to all generations.”
The prophet Jeremiah witnessed the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and the captivity of the people of God. Yet, in the midst of so much despair, he remembered the mercies of God. Mercy is unmerited favor of God. He does not deal with us or reward us according to our wrongs or our lack of responses to his commands. Mercy is not anything that we get on our own. Graciously, God gives to us. He gives us life and an opportunity to repent and turn to him. He grants new mercies every morning. “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not, They are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.” He shows his faithfulness to us.
The gospel of Mark records the faithfulness of blind Bartimaeus begging by the roadside. At some point, during the ministry of Christ, Bartimaeus heard about Jesus. He positioned himself to cry out to him. Even he knew that he needed the mercies of God. He cried out “Jesus of Nazareth, thou son of David, have mercy on me“. To make his voice heard in the crowded, he distinctly identified Christ with his family lineage. God gives us a spiritual awareness of our need for forgiveness and our continual need for him in all things.
Once, he had the attention of Jesus, Bartimaeus requested to have his sight. This is so humbling amazing. In Bartimaeus we see the need of God’s favor. We see that God must come first. Seek his mercy first and all of other things will be added unto us. How many of us cry out for mercies? We must not take his mercies for granted.
His mercies are true and constant. It is he that gives us all things. It is he that give us life. God’s love for us is greater than disobedience. We overcome and are forgiven because of his unfailing mercies. Patiently, he waits to hear our praise and our request for his mercies.
