Sermon Take Away: No Scoreboard

Scripture: Matthew 18:21-35

The disciples were taught by the greatest teacher, Jesus Christ. He taught them how to love the Father. In their love for the Father, he explained to them how we must love one another. We can’t set parameters when it comes to love. Christ did not. He showed us love when he died on the cross.

Peter asked Jesus one of the most profound questions of the human race. Jesus responded with one of the most difficult answers to do without the help of his Spirit. The question was asked how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus responded that we forgive until seven times seventy. In other words, there is no number of forgiveness. There is no scoreboard.

The mercies of God our everlasting and endure forever. He does not keep records of how many times we ask him for forgiveness and how many times he forgives. When asked, he willingly forgives us. The gift of love has forgiveness mingled in it. Love is greater than hate or anger or anything that is not of the spirit of God.

Jesus gave a very impelling parable regarding the kingdom of heaven. A certain king took account of his servants. When he had begun to reckon one servant owed him a debt. But the servant did not have the money to pay. His lord threatened to take his family and all that he had. The servant begged for time to get what was owed and to spare him the loss of his family. His lord agreed and pardon him for time. “The lord of that servant was moved with compassion…” The servant went a found a fellow servant which owed him. He laid his hands on him and demanded that the debt be paid. His fellow servant pleaded for patience and replied that he will pay all of the debt. When fellow servants saw what the wicked servant had done, they went and told their lord. The lord called for the man and reprimanded him for his wicked actions. He reminded him of the compassion given to him, yet he had none for his fellow servant. The lord was angry and delivered him to his tormentors.

Our heavenly Father will judged those who do not have compassion and do not forgive the trespasses of others. No one is worthy to keep how many times we forgive. There is no score board marked forgiveness. Pray in the spirit of Christ for a will to forgive and to be compassionate to others. This is the will of our heavenly Father.
