Sermon Take Away: Portrait of Love

Scripture: I Corinthians 13; I John 4:8

The Apostle Paul wrote I Corinthians 13, known as the love chapter, to give the church some essential wisdom of love in the life of a believer. It is experienced through the love of God. He is the very essence of love.   Agape is God’s immeasurable love for us.   It is the highest form of love.  His love is perfect and constant, full of mercy and grace. His command is that we love him and each other in return.

Love as given in this chapter, has qualities which distinguishes it from love in general. God’s love is constant and it does not change. It is not founded on titles or what we have. Some of the qualities of love are:

“Love beareth all things.” – Graciously, love contains and accepts burdens, while depending on the strength of the Lord. It is the love that we get from Christ, which enables us to cope in times of pressure. This does not make believers passive. It gives the inner strength to know how to help ourselves and others in times of heavy burdens.

“Love believeth all things.” – In God’s love, we trust in his word and know how to apply the word to every facet of our lives.

“Love hopeth all things.” – Hope flows from belief. It is a vision of the word of God working in our lives.

“Love endureth all things.” – Love gives us the will of determination, not to give up. Our success or failure is not based on our own actions, but in understanding God’s will for us.

The lessons of love are very vital to the church in this 21st century. God’s love to us, our love for him, and our love for each other are the most important experience in life. This love sustains all other things in life such as giving, forgiving and ministering. Living life in the love God is the foundation of the most beautiful portrait of love.
