The Philippian letter written to the church brings joy, comfort, and encouragement to the church today. Of the many important topics that are needed in ministry, the Apostle Paul addresses joy, giving, unity, and love. The saints were known to be very giving and very dedicated to the work of the ministry. However, Paul warned them to be aware of those that will come into the church to create discord and distort the word of God.
Euodias and Syntyche, two of his fellow laborers, had a difference between them. But Paul addressed it right away. He requested that the other fellow laborers help them settle the odds that they be of the same mind in the Lord. If the difference was to continue, it could have caused harm to the spiritual growth of the women. Even greater, harm to the work of the ministry. Even the smallest disagreement, but be stopped. So many ministries are destroyed or suffer because of lingering unresolved disagreements.
In chapter three, Paul wrote that they walk by the same rule and mind the same things. Being in Christ is the connecting force for believers. His way will always be consistent. It is the adversary of Christ that seeks to destroy, causing chaos and confusion in the church. If he could discourage the work of the church, it would be just that more difficult to persuade those outside the church to accept salvation.
Paul trusted his joy and crown, his fellow laborers to help these two faithful women. He had confidence, love and respect in the saints at Philippi. He did not leave them uneasy. Instead, he gently reminded them to think on good things when it comes to each other and when it comes to the work of the ministry. “Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true(honorable), honest (reputable), just (impartial) , pure (clean), lovely(appealing), good report (worth speaking of), if there be any praise(admiration), if there be any virtue (righteousness) think on these things.”
