Scripture: John 20:15-19; Matthew 26:34
How often do we tell the Lord that we love him. Throughout the history of God’s people, he wanted Israel to love him above all other things. To love him is to acknowledge that he is the Lord of your life. In the Gospel of John, Jesus told Peter that he would deny him three times. “Verily, I say unto thee, that this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.” When Christ was arrested, Peter followed from a distance and when he was noticed and questioned by the people, he denied that he knew Christ.
Jesus prepared the disciples for the great mission to teach and spread the gospel. To dismiss any discord among them, Jesus gave Peter the opportunity to state his love for him. Jesus asked Peter three times did he love him. Each time Peter said, “ Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee”. Jesus response was to “feed my sheep”. This open dialogue gave Peter the opportunity to dismiss any doubt that his fellow peers may have had about him.
Christ cares about how we feel about him. True, he knows all things, just as Peter stated. But when we talk to him and acknowledge his enduring presence, our faith is in action. That is what God wants from us. “For without faith, it is impossible to please him.”
There are times when we fail to be obedient to God but because he loves us, his mercies give us the opportunity to repent. In a willingness to seek his forgiveness, we tell him that we love him. Our love and devotion to him will cause us to be attentive to his command, “Follow Me”
