Scriptures: Mark 4:35-40
Jesus did not say that we would not have trouble. He promised to be with us in the times of trouble. One of the many treasures of God’s word is that is provides us with so many experiences of his people and how they were delivered.
In the book of Mark, we have an account of the disciples traveling in a ship. No doubt that had just come from a day of ministering and took to the ship for relaxation, while traveling to their next mission. While sailing, a great storm of strong wind and waves beat into the ship, fulling it with water. Christ was asleep in the hinder part of the ship, undisturbed by the present trouble. Trouble will come from all directions. Most time we are not ready for trouble. Trouble is given that we know there is a God above. It prompts us to call on him. Trouble is given to make us faithful believers in the power of God. We would not know how good God is, if we did not have trouble. We would not know where we lack in our spiritual development if it was not for trouble.
In the great storm, the disciples went and awoke Jesus and said to him, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” In trouble, we must seek the help of our Lord. Yes, God knows all things. “Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest by thought afar off.” (Psalm 139:2) He know when your trouble will come, what the trouble will be. Christ was unmoved by the storm. He spent quality time in prayer and praise to his heavenly Father. He just believed that there is not storm that he would not be able to overrule.
Jesus rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace, be still”. He spoke to the trouble and it ceased. Jesus is just so amazing. He questioned the disciples about fear and about having no faith. The disciples had Christ with them. But they were expected to have their on degree of faith. Christ was preparing them for his departure. God has not given us the spirit of fear: but of power, love and sound mind. Being in Christ we must believe that their is nothing to hard that we cannot get through, with the faith of God.
Jesus tells us to ask, seek, knock. We must take our request above material things. Pray for spiritual help. Ask God to take away fear. In fear, we are giving the trouble power of us. Ask God to help you in your faith. Becoming fearless, faithful believers is our life-long experience. Faith to believe that you have the power of your trouble. Faith to know that there is nothing to hard for God. Faith to know that Jesus will take you through your great storms. Faith to know that when you do have trouble that Jesus can fix it.
Jesus response to the disciples sound like he was granting them mercies, while rebuking them for fear and lack of faith. At the same time, he offered them the help to overcome their obstacles so that when the great storms come their way, they would know how to handle them. Christ knew that after his departure, they would have some great struggles to get through because of their love and devotion to him. They were commissioned to take the gospel of salvation throughout their regions. Christ would not be them in his physical being. The gift of the Holy Spirit was given to them, after the ascension of Christ.
Trouble in my way is given that we may know that Christ is our present help. We are not alone. There is nothing that Christ cannot do for us. But we must believe. “The disciples feared exceedingly and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?“ What did they fear more the great storm or the power of Christ. When he steps into our storms, we can expect nothing but an amazing deliverance. Jesus can fix it.
