Sermon Take Away: “Were There Not Ten?

Luke 17:11-19; I Thessalonians 5:16-18

We often talk so much about giving thanks to our gracious and loving God. He does so much for us and he has given us so much in Jesus Christ. Without him, we would have no life for “in him we live and have our being”. Thank you is an expression of gratitude and appreciation for something. It should be a natural response.

Jesus had an interesting encounter with ten lepers. Lepers lived in their own encampment, separate from population because of their disease. But they heard about Jesus and when he had come their way, they cried out to him for mercy. Jesus being full of compassion and focused to do the will of his Father, granted their requests. Following the Jewish law at that time, he commanded them to go to priests for cleansing. It was more of a ritual. No man can cleanse or heal. Only God can do this.

One of the ten returned to give praise to God for his healing. In this passage, we read the importance of giving thanks and praise. Jesus asked, “Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?‘ The one that returned was a Samaritan. The Jews were not friendly neighbors to the Samaritans. Yet, he was one to return to Jesus. All ten were cleansed of the leprosy, but this one was cleansed and saved! “Arise, go thy way thy faith hath made thee whole.”

When we give thanks to God, his blessings continue to flow. He wants us to acknowledge his presence and work in our lives. It is very important. Don’t you want the angels to record that your life was filled with thanks to God. In everything we give thanks because we understand by his Spirit that this is will. You will never know the fullness of his blessings, if you don’t thank him for who he is, what he has done or is doing. One out of the ten was cleansed of leprosy and saved. Salvation was the greater blessing!

Keeping living in your faith and give honor, thanks and praise to the only One who is worthy, our God and our Savior. You can never thank him enough.
