Scriptures: Matthew 19:16-22, Mark 10:21-22, Psalm 19:7, Ephesians 2:8-9
When you accept Jesus Christ into your life, you enter a spiritual journey with a hopeful destination of eternal life. But this journey is not an easy one. Remember that saying “Once saved, always saved?” Well, this is an incorrect saying because every day we believers must draw closer to God so we do not fall or be led astray of the Word.
The only way we can seek spiritual renewal and change in ourselves, we must ask Jesus daily, What Lack I? What do I lack or need more of to please you? Do I have any weaknesses or frailties or habits that can hinder me and my blessings and my journey in salvation? These questions are exactly what the rich man asked Jesus in Matthew 19:16-22.
See, this rich man considered himself a true believer in God and in Jesus. He spoke of following the commandments, obeying God, and being a good person. Yet, he still felt he was lacking something and sought God for answers. However, the answer he received from Jesus was not what he expected and in the long run, he did not accept it and went away sorrowful. The answer Jesus gave him was to sell everything he had and give to the poor and follow him. The rich man could not do this.
In this occurrence we see how Jesus took the time to listen to the rich man and to conversate with him. As Jesus’ life and actions are great examples for how we should live our life and behave, we see it is important to conversate with Jesus daily. Do this because you love God and seek to be perfect in Jesus Christ. Now, no one is perfect, but Jesus encourages us to try and the only way we can do this is by allowing Jesus into our hearts to asking him What do I lack?
Only God knows our heart. He is the only one who can detect our sincerity. Yes, he already knows what we are in need of, but to express our faith and to show our love for God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, we must openly speak what is on our hearts and our minds. Tell God how you feel and what you desire for yourself. Ask God to guide you in the direction he wants you to go, not the one you want. Remember, God sees everything and even knows the future.
If you need guidance on your journey, God gave us his Ten Commandments, which informs us on how to love God and how to love our neighbors. Jesus said in the Word, he came to Earth not to destroy the Law but to fulfill it. The first four commandments speak of our love towards God while the last six speaks of our love towards one another. If we follow these commandments and daily ask Jesus What Lack I? then your journey may be a little bit smoother.
So when you wake up in the morning or while your deep in your prayer, ask God for his chastisement and critique on your character, your personality, your habits, your heart, your spirit, your everything. Ask him and be prepared for his answer.
