Lucifer, The Fallen Angel

Memory Verse: Isaiah 14:12 – “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! “

While many believe and worship God, there must be an understanding of his deceiving enemy Satan, who is the very opposite of God. The word of God gives us an abundant amount of information on this very important topic.

God is excellent, perfect, and impeccable. God is supreme, a unity of co-eternal Persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. There is only one God. He is omnipotent: the ability to do what he wants; He is omniscient: knows all things, the past, present, and future and He is omnipresent: is everywhere. “Here, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.” (Deuteronomy 6:4)

Lucifer was an angel created by God. He was appointed to a high position above all the other angels. His heart turned to love his own beauty and wisdom, rejecting the glory and power of God, his creator. His pride and self-exaltation led to his rebellion against righteousness. In addition, he persuaded one third of the angels to reject God. Lucifer was given time to repent. When this did not occur, he and his followers were cast from heaven to the earth. His name was changed to Satan, which means adversary. Devil means slanderer. (Ezekiel 28:14,15, Isaiah 14:12-14; Luke 10:18)

Why didn’t God destroy Satan when he first propagated evil? God is love. His love is righteous and pure. It is like none other love. His judgment is precise and controlled. “He saith, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked: but that the wicked turn from his way and live…” If God had destroyed Lucifer and his followers, the other angels may have distrusted his love and power over his creations, giving false credence to Satan’s claim about God. Evil will run its full course and man will see who is responsible for all evil. (I John 4:16; Ezekiel 33:11)

The agenda of Satan is to destroy the eternal life of man. “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” In Christ, we are protected from evil devices. In him, we have a spiritual bond that the devil will never take from us. Even though Satan is defeated, he remains very deceptive. We must be vigilant in prayer and faith to avoid being swept into his web of deceptions and lose our place in the eternal kingdom. (John 10:10; 15; Ephesians 6:12)

There are six major instances in which Satan was defeated by our Savior Jesus Christ.

Satan was defeated in heaven. In heaven, the dwelling place of the eternal God, there is love, unity, and peace. He made everything perfect. The creatures were for his praise and worship. Lucifer was given his beauty and honor by God. However, something happened to change the heart of Lucifer. He envied God and Jesus and coveted their position. When his heart failed to honor and worship God, he concocted lies to other angels. Jesus said that “When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.” When Satan did not repent, he and his followers were cast from the presence of God. He remains the adversary of God. (Isaiah 14:12-14; John 8:44)

Satan was defeated in the Garden of Eden. God said, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head and thou shall bruise his head.” This enmity (conflict) between Satan and the woman (represented the Church), between the seed of Satan (represented demonic agents) and her seed (Savior). Her seed, which is the Savior of the world will destroy the head of Satan. Jesus was bruised when he was wounded, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisements of our peace was upon him: and with his stripes we are healed.” (Genesis 3:15; Isaiah 53:4,5)

Satan was defeated at the birth of Christ. When Herod the King heard of the birth of the king of the Jews, he was troubled and commanded that all children two years old and under be slain. The angel of the Lord spoke to Joseph in a dream to take Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt. The prophet Isaiah prophesied about the birth of Jesus in Isaiah 7:14.

“Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Prophecy fulfilled in Luke 2-11 “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” No harm came to Jesus. They lived in Egypt until the death of king Herod. Afterward, Jesus lived and was raised in a city named Nazareth. (Matthew 2:16)

Satan was defeated at the death of Christ. One of the greatest scriptures to state this defeat is “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” God not only gave his best, but he gave his all when he gave us Jesus. It is only through Jesus, that we are reconciled to our Heavenly Father. “…without the shedding of blood is no remission.” (John 3:16; Hebrews 9:22)

Satan was defeated at the resurrection of Christ. Sin no longer has control of people who choose to love and obey God. “Jesus has all power in heaven, in the earth, and under the earth.” There is no place that the power of Christ does not reside. Christ has the victory over the grave. As he has resurrected, we shall also resurrect and be changed to immortality. “Who was delivered for our offenses and was raised again for our justification.” He is our advocate with the Father, to justify us before him. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” Alleluia! (Philippians 2:9; Romans 4:25; I John 2:1)

Satan defeated at his judgment. Satan the devil, the wicked one will be destroyed. During the thousand years, Satan will be bound with no one to tempt and none of his demonic agents to instruct. “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years. And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled; and after that he must be loosed a little season.” After the thousand years expire, Christ shall return for the final judgment and demise of Satan and all evil. Evil will never exist again. (Nahum 1:9; Revelation 19:1-3; 22:1-4)
